Pulling Roots: Reinaldo Gil Zambrano
February 10-April 20, 2024
Reinaldo Gil Zambrano’s (b.1990) understanding of home is multifaceted. The experience of belonging to multiple places at once prompts his exploration of roles we assume in different cultural environments. A life of frequent relocation–between his birthplace of Venezuela, Costa Rica, and various regions of the United States–moved Gil Zambrano to observe and document domestic rituals, traditions, and social themes common to people across borders. His work highlights the nuanced stories that emerge when these often-overlooked aspects of identity are given due attention.
Gil Zambrano’s multi-modal practice, spanning relief printmaking techniques, illustration, murals, street art, and installation, acknowledges the historical applications of these mediums in Latin America as tools of social critique and community-engagement. Blending elements of Hispanic literature’s Magical Realism, autobiography, sequential art, contemporary pop culture, political activism, and traditional iconography, Gil Zambrano creates dreamlike visual narratives—often with community participation—representing multicultural ways of living.
